The United States Department of Agriculture has long set the standard for organic foods in the US, and their benchmarks are some of the strictest in the world.

In fact, the USDA used to have the longest length of time (3 years) for which pesticides must not be detectable in soil before receiving the coveted USDA Organic seal. Established in 1990 by the Organic Foods Production Act, the OFPA had some of the best standards for organic food farming practices. The standards were good enough to lead to the USCOEA in 2009 or US-Canadian Organic Equivalency Agreement and the EU version in 2012 which allowed US Organic foods to be sold in Canada and the EU and labeled as such.
